Musashiya was a companyoperated by Ozeki Yahei and his son Sadajiro. It was the pre-eminent retailerof high-end decorative arts during the Meiji era. The Yokohamabranch of Musahiya was established soon after the Yokohama port opened in 1859. (Yokohama port became the largest of Japan's portsduring the Meihi era.)
In 1877, both father and sonexhibited pieces that they had commissioned under their separate names in Japan'sNational Industrial Exposition (Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai).
By 1880, the company employedtwenty-four people and dealt in enamels, bronzes, ceramics, ivory, crystal, carvings fans, hardstones, tortoiseshell, and lacquer.
Ozeki Yahei 大関弥兵衛 was especially wellknown in the West as a broker for the highest quality metalwork objects.
The marvelous inlay work on Ozeki pieces is astonishing, but they seem over elaborate to Japanese tastes. On the other hand, this is an indication of Ozeki's success as a businessman, for he had a firm grasp of Western tastes. Ozeki remained in business throughout the Meiji period and into the subsequent Taisho era (1912-1926).
