With peace ame Communism and, later, the Cultural Revolution, which banned bodily adornments and made the surrender of such pieces a matter of patriotic duty. The government collected countless specimens from the people and warehoused them in and near Beijing. The owners must have hated parting with their treasures (some people evidently buried them), but an individual faced imprisonment for possessing such objects. The confiscated items remained in storage for many years, although I was told that a large quantity was melted down for coinage.
